VIDEO REFLECTION B

An Inconvenient Truth

Glaciers around the world might be melted in a person's short life. We can go skiing and photograph the snowscape when we are young, but when we get old, we can only show those photos and tell our children that the elegant scenery existed. I felt so nervous when Gore said that what we take for granted might not be here for our children.

This movie is moving. Gore didn’t want to educate or complain people, instead, he just told an inconvenient truth to arouse the consensus and change more minds. He made at least one thousand of speeches and was faced with pressures from all sides, which is sad but respectable. My mind might have been changed because of this movie. As a member of the society and the planet, I didn’t realize global warming not only causes flood and drought, but also results in species extinction, the spread of disease and even the disappearance of the city. When I saw my hometown is under the threat of sinking into the sea, I have never been so scared. I felt that I could really lose my homeland, my family and the places have my cherished memories. In the battle against global warming, individuals are not spectators and then passing the buck to government or world organization, instead, we are the real fighters. Every person has the responsibility to fight against global warming from every day activities instead of only caring about personal interests. It is absolutely true that if we do the right thing, then we're gonna create a lot of wealth and jobs although it might be hard, if we are unrepentant, we are just destroying ourselves. Only the right thing moves us forward.

It is lucky that I chose industrial design as my future career, because I have a special way to combat global warming. For example, applying renewable energy and resources in the products, designing energy efficient appliances and promoting the use of new energies. In addition, inspired by Gore, even some details could have a great significance, like installing timer on appliances to reduce energy waste. We are so lucky to have the opportunity to change people’s behavior and promote the right thing. So we have the responsibility to devote ourselves on researching methods to control global warming and making environmentally protection as an essential design philosophy instead of bending to interests or the pressures from some investors. Actually, companies that attach great importance to environmental issues seem more successful to sell their products. For instance, Toyota is building more-efficient cars and the company has significantly increased its market share. However, companies that didn’t improve are in deep trouble. If it is immoral for an ordinary individual to ignore global warming, it is criminal for a designer to do so because he may affect more people by the products.

Mark Twain said that what gets us into trouble is not what we don't know, it’s what we know for sure that just ain’t so. It is so important for designers to think about the long term and make a correct decision, create a moral design.

"The Era of Procrastination, of Half-Measures, of Soothing and Baffling Expedients, of Delays, is Coming to its Close. In its Place We are Entering a Period of Consequences."
-Sir Winston Churchill

It is our time to take the responsibility, to design for the future and to secure our only home.

My three most important “take home messages” are:

  •        Every person has the responsibility to fight against global warming from every day activities instead of only caring about personal interests.

  •         Industrial designers should make it their own business to design environmentally and socially responsible products in order to change people’s behavior and combat global warming.

  •        The design concept of sustainable development should be the main stream of design, and only carrying out green design can move us forward.
